Manji (1964) - Yasuzo Masumura

Synopsis:
A dutiful, unhappy lawyer's wife falls in love with a young, mysterious woman she encounters at an art class. Soon their affair involves her husband and the young woman's impotent lover and together the four slowly descent into a web of tangled passions.

Masumura was the first Japanese student to attend Italy's prestigious Centro film school, whose alumni include the likes of Michaelangelo Antonioni, Liliana Cavani and Dino de Laurentiis. Filmed in glorious scope, Masumura fills his screen with simple, yet effective compositions. The direction is even, with his cast of players, most of whom have a long association with the director, embodying their roles wonderfully, exuding the passion and turbulence caused by their tangled affair. The exposition is well paced, as twists in the plot emerge with each meeting. The melodrama is high in true Japanese fashion, as pacts and allegiances shift the balance of power throughout the picture. While able to capture the sensuality of his subjects, Masumura does so without excessive voyeurism or blatant sexuality. The result is an exquisite photoplay, rich in the pitfalls of human desire, with interesting and dire unexpected.

Hana to hebi: jigoku-hen aka Flower & Snake -Sketch of Hell (1985) - Shogoro Nishimura

IMDb review:

Pause for a disco dance in the midst of all the rape and torture

This is the first of the many remakes of Masaru Konuma's 1974 classic, based in turn upon the writing of Oniroku Dan. Again a big enema scene is at the centre of this telling of the tale and whilst it is a bit wince inducing, it does not quite have the nasty edge of the original. Beautifully, colourfully and gleefully shot, this is an amazingly focused tale of capture, bondage but more especially humiliation. Much is made of the two naked female protagonists being mother and step-daughter and despite the explicit close-ups of the proceedings, there is always room to show the men and women enjoying the 'spectacle'. The serious tone is set at the start and apart from a pause for a disco dance in the midst of all the rape and torture and the eye popping and completely OTT ending, things remain on that level throughout. Amazing and it is only regrettable that the English language does not seem to have words to describe just how amazing Japanese cinema can be.

Play Time (1994) - Dale Trevillion

Review
In a lot of ways, Play Time is a very silly, and perhaps even very bad, movie. The acting ranges from bland (the male leads) to somewhat melodramatic (the female leads). Many moments are quite laughable, and force you to hit your hand against your forehead. But this is a sex movie. What? Were you expecting to see scenes straight out of a John Ford picture? Didn’t think so! As a real movie, Play Time is pretty mediocre, but as a sex movie, Play Time rocks.
