The Franco bounty continues with this FULL DVD RIP of one of Jess Franco's most elusive Golden Films productions, made in 1981 between "El Hotel de los Ligues" and "Macumba Sexual." It's so rare, in fact, that no print was available for review at the time the book "Obsession - The Films of Jess Franco" was published, and it's not discussed in Carlos Aguilar's book either.
It's a sequel of sorts to "La Chica de las Bragas Transparentes/Pick-Up Girls" (1980) which introduced Antonio Mayans as private detective Al Crosby, the role he plays here - an inexplicable knock-off of the Al Pereira character that dates back in Franco's work to Eddie Constantine's portrayal in "Attack of the Robots" (1965). There were 17 Golden Films productions made between 1981 and 1985, of which "La Noche de los Sexos Abiertos" was the second. Franco produced these films himself and had final cut on them, which explains why they form such an intense and unapologetically original body of work.
Here's the storyline translated from the video box:
"Moira - a beautiful and erotic cabaret dancer - is hired to impersonate another woman who turns out to be a secret agent and must receive an important message in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In that message is reported and discovered the hidden whereabouts of a very important character from World War II [a Nazi officer named Von Klaus] who once absconded with a vast fortune in gold. Aided by private detective Al Crosby, with whom her relationship goes beyond the limits of pleasure, Moira manages to locate the mysterious character." Based on the novel by David Khunne, don't you know.
Of course, Moira is portrayed by Lina Romay - who it must be said looks spectacular here - and the cast also features Eva Palmer (billed in other Franco movies as Lorna Green), Albino Graziani, Mayans' wife Juana de la Morena (whose vagina is cauterized by a hot curling iron), Tony Skios and Franco himself in a funny bit part.
The movie opens on an melancholy note as Al is shown driving into town at nightfall, accompanied by soft samba music whose spell is periodically broken by cutaways to Moira, performing her erotic stage performance to a more jacked-up, heavy breathing piece of music. The music is credited to Pablo Villa and this is easily one of Franco's most musical films from this period, the highlight being a rock number whose only lyric is "The taste taste taste taste taste of your sperm! The taste taste taste taste taste of your sperm!" repeated ad infinitum. Even funnier, in the very next scene when we think we're finally free of it, it turns up on a bedroom radio as Al rapes Moira! The Gran Canaria and Alicante locations are beautiful, and the film's climax features shots taken in the same structure where the "Perverse Countess" interiors were shot a decade earlier.
Spain was still two years away from permitting hardcore porn and Franco sometimes cleverly teases the boundaries of what was legally allowed. During one of her stage performances (it's more of a lumpy garage floor than a stage), Moira masturbates while licking the photos in a sex magazine, literally fellating a photo and performing cunnilingus on another. So the content is as hard as you can get in a soft X.
